 Erica - The Yarn Queen
Erica has a strong background in needlework and textile arts. Like many of the baby boomer generation, she learned in her childhood how to knit, crochet, and embroider. She later studied art & design, with an interest in textiles.
The arrival of grandchildren to knit for, and a love of unique, high quality, hand made knitwear brought about a renewed passion for knitting; and so Erica joined in the worldwide revival of knitting. She found it difficult to source the yarns and designer patterns she wanted locally, and with the apparent demise of the "local wool store" in many towns, Erica could see the need for New Zealand knitters to have easier access to purchasing high quality knitting yarns such as extra fine merino, Italian cashmere and silk blends, fine alpaca, alongside locally produced products such as possum merino. This led to the establishment of The Yarn Queen - a dedicated online knitting store selling only quality knitting products, combined with excellent customer service. The response from knitters has been amazing and The Yarn Queen continues to grow as more fine quality knitting products are added to the online store.
Erica will be known by many for her original design art quilts – many of which have won awards, and have been exhibited in NZ and the USA. She is a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and her work is in private collections around the world.
Although no longer quilting (knitting now reigns!), most of her quilt works sold through her gallery at the boutique lodge (a Qualmark 5 star B&B) she and her husband owned and operated until early 2006. Whilst there Erica became well known for both her art work and her beautiful gardens. The 2 acre park-like grounds were a sought after venue for weddings, garden tours and charity fundraisers. The gardens, lodge, and Erica’s art have featured in magazines in New Zealand and Japan, newspaper feature articles, and other publications, even gracing the cover of NZ Quilter magazine.

Look for The Yarn Queen's featured products in The Directory pages of each issue of New Zealand House & Garden magazine, and, selected issues of New Zealand Quilter and Tots to Teens magazines. Erica welcomes feedback from customers and visitors to the website, and values the friendships she is making on the journey. – “Knitters are warm people!”
